How do parents run a practice coach call at home?

Fifteen minutes, three rounds. You play the coach and call from another room, phone on speaker; your athlete answers out loud, standing up. Round one is the opener, round two is the coach's questions, round three is theirs. Debrief after, never during. Repetition beats pep talks.

Most recruiting advice tells families the same thing: practice the call at home before a coach ever dials. Almost none of it shows how. You can't be on the call — but you can make sure they walk in prepared, and preparation is a rep, not a lecture. Here is the version you can run at the kitchen table this week.

The setup that makes it work

Schedule it like practice. 'Thursday after dinner, fifteen minutes, I'll play the coach.' An athlete who gets ambushed into a surprise roleplay practices being annoyed, not being ready.

Then make it feel like a phone call, because it is one. Go to another room and actually call their phone, on speaker. Face-to-face rehearsal lets them read your face and borrow your confidence; on the real call there's only a voice. Yes, calling your kid from the next room feels ridiculous for about thirty seconds. It also works.

Two more details: have them stand up while they talk, which keeps the voice steady, and keep your own sheet in front of you, the opener and the eight questions below, so you're not improvising either.

Round 1: the opener

Every real call starts the same way, so start there. Call their phone and open like a coach would.

You say"Hi [First name], this is Coach [Last name] from [School]. Is now a good time?"

Their job is to answer like they were ready for it.

What good sounds like"Coach [Last name], thanks for calling — I've been looking forward to talking with you."

Listen for composure more than polish: a steady voice, the coach's name used back, full sentences, no apology reflex. If it comes out shaky, laugh it off and run it again. The opener costs twenty seconds to repeat, which is the whole point of doing this at home.

Round 2: the questions coaches actually ask

Now run the middle of the call. Ask all eight, in any order, and don't soften them; these are the themes real first calls are built from. (Your athlete's side of the conversation is covered in what to say when a college coach calls.) After each answer, jot one note and keep moving. Corrections wait for the debrief.

Q1"Tell me about yourself."

Listen for thirty seconds of specifics: class year, position, team, what they're working on. Not a shrug.

Q2"Why are you interested in our school?"

Listen for a reason only that school fits. 'It's a great program' could mean anywhere, and coaches hear it all week.

Q3"What are your goals for next season?"

Listen for a concrete target and a plan behind it, not 'get better' or 'play at the next level.'

Q4"How are your grades?"

Listen for a straight answer with real numbers. Coaches ask, and they follow up later, so wobbling here matters.

Q5"What other schools are you talking to?"

Listen for calm honesty. It's a normal question, not a trap, and naming other schools is fine.

Q6"Tell me about your season so far."

Listen for a real moment from their club or high school season, told in full sentences, not just a record.

Q7"What are you working on in your game?"

Listen for an honest weakness plus what they're doing about it. That combination is what coachable sounds like.

Q8"What do you want to know from me?"

Listen for real questions, ready to go. 'Nothing' is the one wrong answer.

Across all eight, the pattern is simple: specifics beat vague, every time. An 'I don't know' is fine once if it comes with a plan, like 'Can I get back to you on that?' Filler and slang ('like,' 'lowkey,' 'bro') read as not ready. None of it gets fixed by telling them. It gets fixed by reps.

Round 3: their questions

Flip it. For the last five minutes, your athlete asks three to five questions of their own and you answer as the coach. Keep your answers short and plausible; your acting isn't the point. Them hearing their own questions out loud is.

Watch for one tell. If their questions are generic ('Do you have a good team?' 'What's the campus like?'), that's not a courage problem, it's a research problem. Questions get specific the moment they actually know the program: who graduated at their position, who transferred in, how last season ended. How to debrief without deflating them

Debrief right after, and let them go first: 'What felt good? What would you change?' Athletes usually know, and saying it themselves lands softer than hearing it from you.

Then give two and one: two things that landed, named specifically, and one thing to sharpen. One, not five. The next session fixes the next thing, and a kid who leaves the table feeling capable comes back for another rep.

And never correct mid-call. Interrupting teaches them to glance at you when they're stuck, which is the exact reflex that fails them when the call is real and you're not in the room.

When to level up

There's one thing a parent can't be: a stranger. Your kid knows your voice, your patterns, and exactly how much you'll let slide, so home reps eventually stop being hard. When that happens, the next rung is practice against a coach who answers back, pushes with follow-ups, and grades the rep. That's what CALLTIME's practice reps are. How often should we practice?

Once a week during any stretch when coaches could realistically call, plus one light run in the days before a scheduled call. Fifteen minutes is enough. Three short sessions across three weeks beat one long cram, because the goal is automatic first answers, not a memorized performance.

My kid thinks it's cringe — now what?

They're right, and you can say so. It is awkward, and the kitchen table is the cheapest place to spend that awkwardness. Keep sessions short, let them pick the school, and skip the lecture afterward. If rehearsing with a parent is the real blocker, reps against a coach who answers back get them the same practice without an audience.

Should we record it?

Only if your athlete agrees, and only for their own ears. A voice memo of one round teaches more than any note you can give, because hearing your own filler once beats being told about it five times. Then delete it. This is practice, not evidence.

What if I don't know what coaches ask?

You know more than you think. The eight questions above are the common core of real first calls, and underneath them a coach is asking one thing: can this teenager hold an adult conversation about themselves? Play it straight, ask honest follow-ups, and you'll be close enough. Your athlete needs the reps, not a perfect impression of a coach.
